Raksha Bandhan, also Rakshabandhan, or simply Rakhi, is an annual rite performed in the Indian subcontinent, or by people originating from the Indian subcontinent, and centred around the tying of a thread, talisman, or amulet on the wrist as a form of ritual protection.
Raksha bandhan is celebrated  every year on full moon day of the Shraavana month ,but the date on which raksha bandhan is celebrated every year changes. This year raksha bandhan will be celebrated on 26th of August.

WHY RAKSHA BANDAHN IS CELEBRATED?


Raksha bandhan is a Festivals of the celebration of togetherness ,the celebrations of being one of the family. Festival of Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi is such a major occasion for the brother and sister. It is the celebration of brothers and sisters beautiful bond and unconditional love between them.
The sisters prepare thali for the pooja. It contains the rakhi threads, kumkurn powder(roli), rice grains, diya (an earthen or a metal lamp used for worshiping), agarbattis (incense sticks) and sweets.
 All the sisters out there tie the bond of love called as “Rakhi“ on the wrist of their brothers to make them feel that nothing is more important than this beautiful bond of love and affection.In return  brothers in turn blesses the sister and promises to protect her from the evils of the world as long as they will live. He gifts something to her as a token of his love and affection. An inexpensive thread when ties on a wrist of brothers become so expensive and powerful that nothing can mire their strength.

SIGNIFICANCE OF CELEBRATING RAKSHA BANDHAN

The words “raksha bandhan” has originated from two words that Raksha that means providing a protection to somebody and Bandhan which means bond.
In the Hindu culture this day is celebrated popularly to appreciate the sanctity and purity of the bind that is shared between brother and sister. Apart from those brother and sister who sharing the blood relationship, many of the non biological brothers and sisters celebrate this day.
The sister ties the rakhi on the brother’s wrist and both pray for each other’s well being followed by a pledge from the brother to take care of his sister under all circumstances. The brother usually gifts something to sister to mark the occasion.

Raksha bandhan is primarily belongs to the North and Western regions of India , but celebrated throughout the country with the same verve. Regional celebrations may be different but Raksha Bandhan, has become an integral part of those customs.
Raksha Bandhan is known as different names in different states of India, by different communities. Raksha Bandhan significance also varies with region. Raksha Bandhan has a different significance in southern and coastal regions. Rakhi Purnima is celebrated in the northern and north-western parts of India,  with a lots of zest and esprit.
Here, Raksha Bandhan is the celebration of the chaste and unbreakable  bond of love between a brother and a sister. Raksha Bandhan is called Nariyal Purnima or coconut full moon in the, Western Ghats that includes the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Here Raksha Bandhan signifies the beginning of a new and fresh season for those dependent on sea area.

The Raksha Bandhan day is called Shravani or Kajari Purnima in Madhya Pradesh(MP), Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. Raksha Bandhan, here is an important day for farmers and women who have sons. The Raksha Bandhan day is celebrated as Pavitropana in Gujarat. Raksha Bandhan is the day when people perform the grand pooja in their home or go to the Temples or the worship of the three eyed God, Lord Shiva.
The festival has been celebrated in the same way with the same traditions for centuries. Only the means have changed with the changing lifestyles. Raksha Bandhan is primarily a North Indian festival kindling the deepest emotions of unconditional love and affection amongst the siblings. Just like all Indian festivals, also celebrated with lots of verve.
Celebrated enveloped in the festiveness. The rakhis and the sweets are bought and prepared generally before the Purnima. As per the tradition the family members get ready for the rituals early. They take a bath to purify mind and body before starting any preparations.
